John Harvey (1784-1872) established the Bridge Wharf Brewery on its present site by the River Ouse. A fine example of a country brewery in Victorian Gothic Design (take a look at the large painting above the fireplace at the Royal Oak) the buildings remain largely unchanged although they now house modern plant and equipment.
Harveys remains an independent, family company. The sixth and seventh generations, daughters and grandchildren, continue to manage the business. Three members of the Harvey family are directors of the company.
Selecting the finest quality Pale and Mild Ale malts, together with the choicest Sussex hops, brewing from their own fresh spring water and a yeast which has remained unchanged for over three decades, has resulted in a range of beers which have delighted the people of Sussex for many years.
When in Lewes, visit the brewery shop in Cliffe High Street.

Did you know that some excellent wines are produced on a significant scale from vineyards barely more than ten minutes drive from the Royal Oak?
In the heart of rural Sussex lies Bolney Wine Estate, a vineyard that carries on the tradition brought to Britain by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago.
Janet & Rodney Pratt's vision started in 1972 with 3 acres of vines. With international and national awards along the way the current era really started in the 1990's when daughter, Samantha Linter, took charge of the winemaking. Since her arrival there have been many more awards and the vineyards now extend to 22 acres. A new 'state of the art' winery was installed in 2005 which has taken Bookers Vineyard to their intended goal of producing top quality red, white and sparkling wines.
You can visit the shop at Bookers Vineyard from Monday to Friday, or you can purchase online. Join their Wine Club, or book a tour and tasting - a great way to experience how a working vineyard and winery operate.
We are pleased to have been able to add two of Booker's wines to our regular wine list - 'Dark Harvest' - an elegant medium-bodied red and Pinot Gris - a crisp dry white.
