The Royal Oak at Poynings

There has been a 'Royal Oak' on this site since the 1880's.  The present 'Royal Oak' is privately owned and operated by Paul Day and Lewis Robinson who aquired the business in 1996.

There is, of course, a team of loyal staff headed up by Inn Keeper and Host Alex Tipping who joined us in June 2007.  Alex stepped into the shoes of Steve Hamence who returned to his native Sydney, Australia at the end of October.  Steve departed with our very best wishes and our heartfelt thanks for the dedicated hard work he had put in to the Royal Oak.

Wayne Cortilla,  who joined us as Second Chef in July 2006 has slotted seamlessly into his new role as Head Chef, following the departure of David Wharton to embark on his own entrepreneurial venture.  David, who was with us for over six years,  and his partner Karen are now hosts at the Chequers at Slaugham.

Matt Nixon is into his fourth year with us as Assistant Manager and Sian James, in her seventh year, continues to rule the roost on the bar.

Our many regular visitors will have witnessed an ongoing program of refurbishment over the last couple of years.  However, rest assured that now that we are coming towards the end of the various projects , we will not rest on our laurels!

We are well aware that a well designed, comfortable and spotlessly clean environment is just the starting point for your eating and drinking experience here at the Royal Oak.  Of course, the food and drinks you enjoy and, in particular, the warm welcome and standard of service you encounter are even more important and it is here that we will continue to strive to ensure that you get the very best.
